What are Boho Braids?

Boho braids, also called bohemian braids, are named for their effortless, relaxed nature. It’s a style that incorporates braids, especially knotless braids and undone curls, to achieve an airy, natural, and carefree look that is mostly associated with bohemian fashion.

What are Boho Braids

Using the three-strand braiding method and the feed-in method to add the curly strands, boho braids offer a voluminous and glamorous style. But aside from their aesthetically pleasing look, they are also well-known to help with hair growth and reduce breakage.

Why Boho Braids Are Worth Trying?

You might be wondering if boho braids are really worth the hype or if you should try them. Here are a few reasons why I'll say they are worth it:

Why Boho Braids Are Worth Trying

1. They Protect the Natural Hair

While boho braids are one of the trendy looks out there, this style also protects the natural hair from dryness, breakage, and manipulation. It is common knowledge that braids are a good protective style; well, boho braids are not any different. They can keep your hair safe, help you retain moisture, and protect your hair from environmental factors.

2. They are versatile

Boho braids can be styled in different ways. They cater to your preferences and needs. Whether you prefer long, short, or medium length, you can wear them. The braids can also be styled in different hair colors, no matter your choice.

3. They are low-maintenance

Similar to other kinds of braids, boho braids are easy to manage. They can last up to two months if properly taken care of and they do not require much. A gel to keep your edges flat, oil, mousse, and proper protection at night are all you need to maintain your style.

4. They Reduce Tension

Install knotless boho braids for a tension-free style. These braids are gentler on the scalp than traditional braids. Plus, they are also lightweight, allowing you to wear your style freely.

5. They Promote Hair Growth

If you want to grow your hair, boho braids are a good bet. They reduce manipulation, allowing your hair to retain its length, and they also minimize breakage.

How to Achieve Boho Braids?

It takes time to achieve any boho braids look, sometimes even up to 10 hours, depending on the length of hair you want. (Good news! Cynosure Hair releases human hair pre-braided boho braided wig for effortless install and affordable price.)

See how you can achieve boho braids if you’ll be styling it yourself in this section.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to style boho braids:

Step 1: Prep Your Natural Hair

A style looks fresh, neat, and beautiful on clean hair. Take out time to wash your hair before braiding your strands. You can start by shampooing, then rinsing and conditioning. Make sure to remove every dirt and buildup accumulated in your hair before following up with moisturizing.

Note: Using hydrating products is best to keep your strands moisturized and strong against manipulation during the braiding process. If you experience breakage a lot, you can also use a deep conditioner to strengthen your strands more.

Afterwards, dry your hair properly and apply your moisturizing product.

Step 2:  Prepare Your Hair Extensions

Prepare Your Hair Extensions

There are different hair extension options you can use for your hair. Keep in mind that your choice will determine how long your braids will last and how lovely they’ll look. I always recommend using human hair extensions to achieve a natural look.

But no matter your choice, it's totally fine. Prepare them by separating the hair extensions. You can arrange them on a braiding hair rack, so it becomes easy to select and add to your hair.

Step 3: Part and Section Your Natural Hair

Part and Section Your Natural Hair

You can always part your hair any way you wish. Simply divide into sections, then equal rows, and then hold with hair clips or elastic bands.

The hair clips/bands keep them from disturbing you when you start to braid. They also help to keep the sections well divided and neat. Once you’re all set and the sections are neatly clipped, start your boho braids.

Step 4: Start Braiding

Start Braiding

This is the most technical part of the braiding process, as it can make or break your look.

Start by unclipping one of the sections at the back of your head. Then divide it into three equal parts and braid two or three times, then add the first piece of your hair extensions.

Braid using the three strands and keep adding more hair extensions at intervals to achieve a knotless style. Don’t forget to also include the curly strands multiple times while braiding.

Once you've almost finished the braids, tie them to make sure they don't loosen.

Step 5: Repeat the Braiding Process

Repeat the Braiding Process

Move to the next section and repeat the braiding process I mentioned in step 4. Just like I said, start with a little strand of hair extensions before adding more as you braid.

If feeding in the curly pieces to the braids is a bit difficult for you, you can wait till you’re done, then crochet the pieces to the braids. All you have to do is loop the curly hair, then use the crochet to pull the curly strands through the braids.

Now, finish up the whole section you’ve created and wrap the unbraided ends of the hair on flexi rods. Dip them in hot water for a few seconds and remove them. To avoid getting everywhere messy with water, get a towel and pat the hair dry. Once the hair is cool, unwrap it to see your spiral curls.

Step 6: Add the Last Touches

The finishing touches help to tame the hair, seal the ends, and add shine. Apply mousse to your hair, then follow up with a hair oil on your scalp to reduce tension. Lastly, use hairspray to secure your style.

Quick Tip: For beginners, it is advisable to visit a hair salon to achieve your boho braids. A professional hairstylist can ensure a neater, high-quality look that protects your hair.

What Hair Extensions are Best for Boho Braids?

I mentioned earlier that I'll always recommend using human hair extensions for boho braids. Well, I have my reasons. While using synthetic hair isn’t a bad choice, human hair extensions are more natural. They can make your style appear more fabulous. Plus, they don’t irritate and are super lightweight.

Human hair extensions also hold their curl pattern better than synthetic hair and do not tangle as much as synthetic options. However, they can be very expensive.

Here’s a trick if you can’t afford human hair extensions for both the braids and curly pieces. I advise you get synthetic braiding hair extensions, such as X-Pression, then human hair extensions for the curls. This way, the curls will last longer, and the braids will also look good.

But if human hair extensions for the braids and curls are within your budget, then go ahead and use them!

How Long Do Boho Braids Last?

How Long Do Boho Braids Last

Generally, boho braids can last up to 6 weeks, depending on how well you care for them. With the right products and proper care, they can even be preserved longer for around 8 weeks. But their longevity also depends on other factors, like your choice of hair extensions and lifestyle.

If you frequently engage in activities that cause heavy sweating or exposure to water, your style may not last as long due to friction. On the other hand, those with less active lifestyles can wear their hairstyles longer.

Many people believe the misconception that boho braids are difficult to maintain. However, that is not entirely true. They are actually easy to manage and only need a good haircare routine and regular upkeep.

These are some tips on how to maintain your boho braids.

- Always sleep with a satin or silk bonnet on. It prevents friction against your cotton bedsheets and pillowcases. Alternatively, you can consider getting silk or satin pillowcases.

- Use a scalp cleansing spray or dry shampoo to clean your scalp after 2 to 3 weeks. This will remove buildup and control odors.

- Take your mousse, oil, and a leave-in conditioner and water mixture as a friend. You can refresh your curls and your overall style with them.
