What Does It Mean to Wrap Your Hair/Wig at Night

It is just as the name suggests; it means smoothing your strands and rolling them around your head. This is a method that lays your hair flat against your scalp with no part poking out. The technique protects your hair from harm, preventing tangles and breakage as you sleep.

Mostly, it is used to preserve wig styles, silk press hair, straightened hair, relaxed hair, or even curled hair after using the roller set. Wrapping your hair allows it to remain straight and keep its body and shape even after the night.

Why Should You Wrap Your Hair/Wig at Night? (Any Benefits)

I’m sure you can already guess that there are tons of benefits to wrapping your hair before going to bed at night. Just like any other protective nighttime technique, it’s good for preventing tangles, dryness, and friction and protecting your hair.

Why Should You Wrap Your Hair/Wig at Night

Let's take a look at some of those benefits.

1. Prevents Breakage and Damage

If you’re like me, who doesn’t sleep in the same position and wakes up at the same position, wrapping your hair will prevent tangles, split ends, and damaged ends that come from turning and tossing while sleeping. The technique does well by tucking your hair safely and making sure there is no breakage during the night.

2. Keeps Your Hair Hydrated

Another benefit is that it keeps the moisture in your hair. If you’ve noticed that your hair becomes dry in the morning, no matter how well you moisturized the previous night, it could be because you haven’t protected your strands.

This method serves as a barrier that prevents your cotton pillowcases from absorbing the moisture and natural oils in your hair. So, you can say goodbye to loss of moisture by wrapping your hair properly at night. Think of it as a way to lock in moisture and prevent dryness.

3. Maintains Your Style

Do you want to maintain your style the longest? An easy way to keep your style, the shape, and body of your hair or wig is to wrap your hair before going to bed.

It keeps your style flat and in place and reduces the need to restyle in the morning.

As a matter of fact, it is recommended for those who want to have loose curls after using a roller set. This technique allows your hair to keep its shape and makes your style just as beautiful as the previous day.

4. Reduces Frizz

Another benefit is that you get healthier, frizz-free hair by morning. Turns out the secret to getting a smooth style was to protect your. It minimizes frizz by creating a barrier that doesn’t allow your hair to rub against the clothing. This results in maintaining the cuticle and reducing the need to restyle.

5. Make Your Wig Last Longer

By preventing tangles and dryness, you are extending the lifespan of your wig and allowing your style to last. You won’t need to reinstall the wig or lay your edges and the lace again.

What You Should Do Before Wrapping Your Hair or Wig?

Before wrapping your hair and going off to bed, there are a few things you must do:

1. Make sure your hair is properly detangled

Remember that the goal is to keep your hair smooth with no tangles and breakage in the morning. So, to ensure you’re on the right track and your hair is well-protected, it is advisable to detangle your hair.

Simply get a paddle brush or a wide-tooth comb and comb your hair or wig through. Start from the tip and work your way to the root, removing all the knots and tangles carefully. Make sure you aren’t dragging or pulling your hair as you comb.

2. Moisturize and hydrate

The next thing is moisturizing and hydrating. Go in with a good product that hydrates your strands or wig. For this part, you can use whatever products you use for your hair. For instance, a leave-in conditioner, oil, serum, or moisturizer. However, make sure they aren't heavy products. Instead, go for lightweight products.

The product will help to keep your hair in place while also preventing dryness, breakage, and damage.

3. Straighten your wig

If your hair isn’t smooth already, you can go ahead and use your hot tool to straighten your wig or hair. I like to do this part whenever I install a straight wig. This helps minimize styling again in the morning. Use the hot tool to lay your hair flat. You can use it mostly at the top of your head and the ends of your hair. Once it is nice and smooth, then you’re ready to wrap your hair.

How to Wrap Your Hair/Wig at Night?

Here is a step-by-step guide on how you can wrap your hair at night:

Step 1: Part Your Hair

Get your hairbrush or a comb and create a part by the side. This parting doesn’t have to be clean or smooth. However, make sure it is not rough as well. You can create the part on the side or in the middle of your head.

Step 2: Start Wrapping Your Hair or Wig

Now, choose any side you want to start wrapping from and brush your hair to make sure it is smooth with no tangles. Brush it in the direction you want to wrap it. Now scoop all your strands in your hands and simply wrap them towards the side, bring it till it reaches the front, which is towards the other side you began wrapping your hair from or where your length reaches. This is like following a circular motion.

Step 3: Hold in Place with Your Wig Cap or Silk Scarf

Once your strands have reached the other side or where the length stops, put on a wig cap or tie a silk scarf to keep your hair in place. This ensures your hair or wig stays tightly secured and doesn’t move throughout the night.

Put on a hair bonnet on top of your scarf or wig cap for extra protection, then you can go to bed.

Wrap Your Hair or Wig at Night Using Tights

This is an easy method of keeping your hair safe. First, get your scissors, the tights, the wig band, and a comb.

Step 1: Use your comb to detangle your hair or wig first. Be sure it's free of knots by running your hands through it.

Step 2: Divide your hair into two parts, starting from the middle. This is to create the sections you’ll be holding in place with the tights.

Step 3: If you’re wearing a wig, get a wig band and hold the lace front down. Make sure it covers the lace and your baby hairs properly.

Step 4: Cut the foot parts of the tights to create holes, then put it on your head. Make sure it covers all of your head before pulling the parts you've divided earlier into the leg parts of the tights. Pull each part through and wrap it around your head perfectly.

Step 5: Wear a silk bonnet over the tights and go to bed.

Important Tips

- Make sure to secure the ends of your hair with bobby pins if you feel you need extra security.

- Always use a silk or satin bonnet at night. They grant you more protection from frizziness and dryness.

- Wrap all of your hair in the same direction and avoid allowing any strand to fall off while you do so.

- You can use a silk pillowcase for extra security against moisture absorption. They also protect your strands well.

- Always make sure to detangle thoroughly and apply a lightweight moisturizer to your strands before wrapping your hair.

- Avoid using elastic bands when wrapping your hair. They can pull on your hair and cause breakage.

- Make sure the wrap is snug but not too tight, as tight wraps can cause headaches.

Conclusion

Aside from the two wrapping methods in this post, there are many other suggestions on how to wrap your hair. For example, the braiding method. But some of these methods can create waves in your hair by morning, so it is not the best technique for straight hair.

Opt for one of the two methods above and wrap your hair for a smooth result in the morning. I’m certain your hair will stay well protected all through the night.
